Every week of the school year, volunteers from the local churches teach Religious Instruction in state primary schools in and around Toowoomba.

On Monday February 10, RI teachers gathered together to be commissioned for 2014. Hosted by Toowoomba Community Baptist Church, members of the Toowoomba Ministers’ Association gathered to pray for, and encourage the teachers.

Mrs Sharon Kirk, Chair of the R.I Advisory Committee, gave an overview of the development of the teaching of R.I in and around our city. This has led to the current cooperative instruction program, with volunteers drawn from a variety of denominations and church groups.

Ps Ian Shelton of Toowoomba City Church, spoke of our children’s need to not only learn of the faithfulness of our unchanging God, but to see His faithfulness modelled by those who bring the Good News of Jesus to them.

Mr David Kirk, principal of Gowrie State School, and a representative of Education Queensland, encouraged R.I teachers to commit to training, in order to be well equipped in the preparation and delivery of lessons.

Following the commissioning service, on Thursday February 13, Highfields State School held their R.I teachers’ orientation for 2014. Ps Noel Wilcox of Highfields Baptist Church prayed for and commissioned a number of RI teachers.

Mr Warren Merchant, Principal, assured the R.I teachers of his ongoing support in 2014. The in-service was led by Dennis Lockhart, a retired school principal, who drew on his life’s experiences and those in the classroom, to encourage teachers to do the best job possible with God’s help.

More R.I teachers are still needed in a number of our schools. This is a wonderful opportunity for mission; to take church to children, many of whom have no connection with a local congregation.

Jesus said, ‘Go into all the world’. Let’s start – down the road!
